In honor of Sesame Street’s 50th anniversary, here are my top 5 favorite Sesame Street Characters of all time.

5: Count Von Count: There is not much you can count on in life, but you can count in The Count counting things. I appreciate that. Plus he has a cooler voice and personality than his cousin Count Chocula who sold out to promote mediocre cereal.

4: Hoots The Owl: While not as well known as others in this list, Hoots The Owl stands with Bleeding Gums Murphy as the two best Saxophone players in TV history. He has performed with everyone from Little Richard to The Squirrel Nut Zippers in his decades long career.

3: Bert and Ernie: Name me a more dynamic duo? You can’t. They are the greatest odd couple of all time. #LoveIsLove

2: Cookie Monster: Having an identifiable “personal brand” is important in life and no one has a more iconic brand than Cookie Monster. Everyone knows what he is about. C is for Cookie and that is good enough for him. He also gets bonus points because as 50 Cent pointe out Ja Rule completely stole his voice.

1: Oscar The Grouch: With all due respect to Omar in The Wire, Oscar is the hardest character in the history of television. The dude literally lives in the trash and hates on everything and everyone. I mean he sang “knock 3 times on my trashcan lid so I’ll know it’s you and here’s what I’ll do, I’ll yell “go away” cause I don’t want to see you.” If that was not hard enough for you, he sang the most metal lyrics ever when he sang “I’ll happily kick in the shin, any person who plays violin.” Total badass. Life can be hard on the streets and no one is harder than Oscar.
