Representative Katherine Clark (D-MA) Helped Secure Millions To Screen and Treat Maternal Depression

My Representative Katherine Clark (D-MA) on July 28, 2015 introduced The Bringing Postpartum Depression Out of the Shadows Act. Clark’s bill was incorporated into  21st Century Cures Act which passed on November 30, 2016. Today, Representatives Clark’s initial act resulted in the distribution of nearly 5 million dollars to screen and treat maternal depression. The Health Resources and Services Administration reports“$4.5 million will support seven states to implement the Screening and Treatment for Maternal Depression and Related Behavioral Disorders Program. Real-time psychiatric consultation, care coordination, and training will help front-line providers screen, assess, refer and treat pregnant and postpartum women for depression and other behavioral health conditions such as anxiety and substance misuse – including in rural and medically underserved areas.” Source: https://www.hrsa.gov/about/news/press-releases/hrsa-awards-12-million-maternal-child-mental-health-programs#behavioral

Today on her Facebook page Katherine Clark wrote “seven states got $5 million as part of my 2016 Bringing Postpartum Depression Out of the Shadows Act. For too long, stigma and outdated attitudes about #mentalhealth have kept moms from getting the help they need. Together, we'll start healing and stop the stigma.”

Research supports that supporting maternal mental health helps both mothers and the long term health and development of their children.

I commend Representative Clark for leading the battle against maternal depression.
